FC Chippenham 1 v Hungerford Town 4

We suffered our first league defeat of the season today to a very good and strong Hungerford Town team, although the game was a lot closer than the final score would suggest.

This was a close game between two good sides and the opening period saw both sides battling away and testing each other out.  We started well and perhaps had the better chances early on and we were unlucky not to take the lead after a quarter of an hour, a corner from the right was not cleared and fell to Joe Ballinger who shot was saved by the Hungerford keeper onto the bar and unfortunately for us the ball fell the wrong side of the goal line and was cleared.

We took the lead in the 19th minute, a battle in the centre of the Hungerford half saw FC Chippenham awarded a free kick.  The ball was placed about 25 yards out and Caine Bradbury stepped up and sent the ball into the top corner away from the out stretched arms of the Hungerford keeper.

We managed to keep the lead for 17 minutes in during which time we had to shuffle the team around after Dan Adams suffered a bang to the head following a collision with the goal post.  Conor Chivers took over in goal and we shuffled the team around, but Hungerford levelled when we failed to close the ball down and gave the Hungerford player too much time to place his shot and level the score.

The second half was another close period, but we were not able to get back in front and after Hungerford took the lead in the 55th minute they went on to take control of the game.  Their second goal owed a little to fortune as a speculative strike from distance took a deflection which took the ball looping over Conor who could do nothing about it in goal.

Whilst we tried to get back on level terms, it was one of those days where nothing was really going our way as we struggled to move the ball and threaten in the final third.  Whilst we tried everything we could to get back level, Hungerford made the game safe with two quick goals in the 74th and 75th minute and the game ended in a 4 – 1 defeat.

Whilst it may have been our first defeat, we played some good football and other than the final 15 minutes or so of the game we were in this match.  We look forward to the cup next weekend and hope to be able to put the defeat behind us and progress.
