Highworth Town Juniors J 4 v FC Chippenham 4

Another great game between two good sides, having only met the week before both teams were aware of each other’s strengths and weaknesses .  Having got a great start a week ago we found ourselves behind inside two minutes, when Highworth broke down the right and we failed to deal with the cross and they scored from an unchallenged header.

Having gone behind the boys gave the perfect response and within a minute we were back level after Ash Alchin ran onto a throw ball the slide it past an advancing keeper.   We played some good football against a team who were trying to play a high line and catch us offside and there were a number of offside decisions that went against us in the first period where the player running from deep was being flagged.  This did not deter us and we continued to press and play balls beyond their defence for our front line, who have some blistering pace, to run onto and in the 25th minute Alex Cook latched onto such a ball to give us the lead.

Five minutes later Highworth were level, when a speculative shot from distance appeared to move in the wind and went past Dan in goal, and having gone level Highworth took the lead just after the half hour mark a lead they maintained into the interval.

The boys started the second half well and with the slope in our favour for long periods of the game we kept the home side tied in to their half.  We moved the ball well as we looked for the equaliser but we weren’t able to get the goal, although we went close on a couple of occasions.  But in the 58th minute the hard work paid off when Ben Millet worked well in the area to find the room to put the ball in the back of the net.

The game moved from end to end as both teams looked for the winner and with eight minutes left Highworth were awarded a free kick just outside of the penalty area and the ball into the box was put in by an outstretched leg.  With little time left it looked like we were heading for our first league defeat of the season, but the boys dug in and after having a goal chalked off for offside, the referee bought play back for a free kick about five yards outside of the Highworth area.  Luke Price stepped up and sent the ball heading towards the top corner and whilst a defenders head may have helped the ball on its way in we were back level.

As time ran out the game finished level at 4 – 4.  It was a good game of football and whilst the boys were disappointed with some of the offside decisions against us today, they continued to play and create chances.
