FC Chippenham 6 v Pewsey Vale 5
Our first game of the new season, was a well fought battle with both sides playing some good passing football on a sunny day at Stanley Park. The result in the end could have gone either way but thankfully it was FC Chippenham who were able to fight back and claim the points.
We started well and for a large part of the first half we seemed to be in control of the game. With the first ten minutes seeing the teams test each other out, FC Chippenham took the lead in the 14th minute when Ciaran broke out from the centre of defence and shout from 25 yards beating the Pewsey keeper and giving us a deserved lead.
That lead was double in the 22nd minute when we were awarded a penalty after Ash Alchin turned in the box and was caught on the shin, Cain Bradbury stepped up and converted from the spot. Two minutes later we took a three goal lead when Josh Drury broke into the area and slotted the ball into the corner.
Having looked comfortable for the first thirty minutes and dealt with everything that Pewsey threw at us, they finally came back into the game in the last ten minutes of the half. In the 35th minute we failed to clear a corner or put pressure on the ball which was picked up by the visitors and their shot took a deflection on route to goal leaving Dan Adams in goal with no chance of saving. Just before the half time break Pewsey cut the deficit to one goal when a shot from the edge of the area. Whilst Dan got a hand to the ball he was not able to stop it crossing the line and Pewsey were back in the game going into the interval.
The start of the second period began as the first had ended with Pewsey in the ascendancy and they certainly took advantage of their pressure and within 12 minutes of the restart they were level and then less than a minute later they took the lead for the first time in the game.
Going behind seemed to be the light bulb moment for us as in the 56th minute we were back on level terms, following some good work down the left the ball was crossed and Ben Millett was perfectly placed at the far post to tap in the cross.
Three minutes later we were back in front, Alex Cook was through on goal and as he attempted to go round the keeper he was pushed to the floor and the referee pointed to the spot and Luke Price stepped up to convert the kick, although the Pewsey keeper did get a good hand to the penalty but could not keep the ball out.
The game flowed from end to end, for the next twenty minutes but neither team were able to score further. Bill Boakes then appeared to make the game safe with four minutes to go when he run at the defence and was able to bundle to ball home, although he did get injured in the process.
However, the scoring was not over and as Chippenham tried to shore up the defence and not concede further Pewsey scored with a great strike from about 25 yards that beat the keeper and this set up a tense last couple of minutes, but Chippenham managed to see the game out and ended with the win against a good Pewsey side.
