Oh lord won’t you hire me a Mercedes Benz…..
A little about the dark horse of our rental fleet, the Mercedes SLK350 (AMG).
2011/12 saw a the new generation of SLK break cover, the R172 model, and I have to admit, I don’t really like it. When you offer the current generation up to the previous generation, the R171, its looks just don’t stack up.
Good job then that we have the better looking, R171 SLK on our hire fleet. It’s also the most understated car by some margin, with many of its hirers surprisingly impressed with what it can offer. It’s also probably the most complete all rounder of the cars we have – striking looks, great V6 performance (0-60 circa 5.5 seconds), auto or manual, electric everything, Sat Nav, and a folding hard top, which may I add, is a work of art. Oh and let’s not forget the warm air around you neck. Genius.
Our own SLK has an added extra, the AMG kit, consisting of AMG wheels, and front, side and rear skirts, and finished in metallic black, really makes it stand out. I’ve heard several people say “I haven’t seen one like that before”. The body kit removes the soft, feminine shapes of a standard SLK and replaces them with more aggressive, angular ones, without going over the top.
We tell anyone who hires one of our convertibles, as long as it’s not raining, get the roof down. Warm, cold, cloudy or clear. It’s all part of the fun. The SLK backs up this way of thinking with 3 stage heated seats, a wind deflector, and ‘Airscarf’ blowing warm air around your neck. The only thing it doesn’t do is give you a wooly hat, that’s down to you!
It also deals with longer journeys very well, call it a mini-GT car if you will. And it also sports a good sized boot, ideal for one of our weekend breaks then!
So, if you’ve never thought of getting behind the wheel of an SLK, I strongly urge you to try it. I’m confident you won’t regret it. You might even come back for more!
