FC Chippenham 9 v Kingshill Sports 2

Having struggled over the last couple of weeks, we got back to winning ways today as we returned to league action against Kingshill.  On a pitch that cut up as the game progressed we got off to the perfect start and the opening 5 minutes was one of the best periods we have had all season.

We broke the deadlock in the second minute of the game as we worked the ball down the right wing, the ball came back to Lewis Morrissey who on seeing the keeper slightly off the line lobbed the Kingshill keeper.  Two minutes later a corner from the right was met by Conor Chivers and bundled over the line and in the sixth minute Bill Boakes fired home in the area.

Having taken control of the game, we moved the ball well and continued to press down both wings, as well as getting some joy with balls over the defence for the pace of Alex and Ash to run onto. However, in the 15th minute the visitors, Kingshill got themselves back in the game, when our own defence frailties came back to haunt us, as we failed to deal with a cross into the area and the ball fell to a player at the back of the area to slot home.

With the visitors scoring we continued to press without getting any success until the 21st minute when Ash Alchin turned well and progressed into the area, his shot to the side of the keeper hit the post and stopped on the goal line in the wet condition, but Alex Cook followed the shot in and was on hand to ensure it crossed the line, consolidated our lead just before the break when Ben Millett fired home in the 37thminute.

The second half started with Kingshill putting us under some pressure as they came out fighting to get back into the game.  We managed to withstand the pressure and kept them out, with some solid defending and a couple of quality saves from Dan Adams in goal who tipped a goal bound effort round his post.

Having had a twenty minute period where both teams created chances, it was Chippenham who got the first goal of the half in the 64th minute when Alex got his second of the game.  This was followed in the 70thminute, Bill got his second of the game following a trade mark run at the defence.

We continued to press and two minutes later Conor got his second of the game when he rose above all the others in the area to head home from a corner again.  Chippenham’s scoring was completed two minutes later after another fine spell of football when Alex was released with a ball over the defence and he sent the ball over the advancing keeper.

The scoring was completed by the visitors in the 75th minute when they worked the ball down the left wing and scored, a goal that the probably fully deserved given their second half performance.

We can be pleased with today’s performance, have suffered two defeats in the previous games, they boys put in a good performance and continued to play football.

A final word for the visitors, who did not stop playing football or battling until the final whistle and put in a good performance and certainly made this a good game of football.
