As part of Drive Southwest’s sponsorship of FC Chippenham youth, We’ll bring you the match report after every game……

FC Chippenham 1 v Wootton Bassett Town Blue 6

Having reached the Quarter Final of the League Cup without kicking a ball, as a result of receiving two walkovers, our cup dream ended today.  We came up against a very good Wootton Bassett Town team who play their football a division above us in Division One and towards the end of the game it did show.

We battled hard today and played some good football at times but in the end the strength and power of the opposition won through.

We found ourselves put under pressure from the start of the game, the opposition closing us down and harassing the player on the ball and whilst we did manage to string some possession together we never really threatened.

The visitors took the lead in the 10th minute, a corner on the right was not cleared and the ball was fired back in and despite the best efforts of the defender on the line, the ball crossed before it was hooked back out.  The lead was then doubled in the 18th minute with a ball over the defence with an attacker running from deep latching on to it to cross and the ball was fired home.

Despite going behind the boys continued to play football without really testing the Wootton Bassett keeper. But we were still in the game as the match proceeded to half time and it was clear that the next goal could be crucial for the contest.  Thankfully the next goal was scored by FC Chippenham, a ball played through for Alex to run on to hit him in the back on the edge of the area and it dropped in just the right place for Josh Drury who struck the ball into the back of the net from 20 yards.

Whilst we had been under pressure in the half, we were still in the game at the break with the 1st half ending 2 – 1 to the visitors.

We needed a good start to the second period, but we could not get the equaliser as the visitors continued to press the ball and in the 52nd minute they went further ahead.  As we pressed to get back into the game two quick goals killed the contest as Wootton Bassett consolidated their lead with goals in the 63rd and 68thminute.  Their sixth goal came just before the end in the 79th minute and we leave the cup with a 6 – 1 defeat.

We must pay some praise to our visitors today as they were a very physical and good side who played some good football and we wish them well in the next round.

For our part whilst we were on the wrong end of the result, the boys can be proud of the effort today.  It was certainly a day when the different is build and size was evident, but the boys did not shy away from the battle they gave everything but it was just not our day.  As the football cliché goes we can now concentrate on our league campaign for the remainder of the season.
